Day 12: The Sweet Sixteen, Part 1
I like these things when they don't have gelatin in them. Anyway, we missed another day despite Jack's better sleep habits of the last few nights.
1. The Monster at the End of this Book vs. 5. Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb
This was a close one, and I would be remiss for not giving an update on the mysterious Al Perkins before we slow-played "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb" off. According to a post at the end of the blog I shared a few weeks ago made by his step-daughter, Al was a college roommate of Ted Geisel's, animated for Disney, and founded SPORT magazine. Take my word for it and don't read any of the other posts (golden-age Disney employees didn't always lead happy lives). But Jack loves this book and this really came down to the last page.
This one is honestly proof that Jack is picking the books. "Tennis Legends" is a lot of fun (and again, I've learned tons about tennis), but it's long and not as fun to read as "Doggies." Jack really enjoys it, though, and there's no reason to think it can't make it to the final four or beyond. And now there are no Sandra Boynton books left in the region (or the tournament).

1. I Love You, Stinky Face vs. 4. Little Town of Spirals
Jack was honestly a bit of a stinky face for these two books, and this turned into which book irritated him less. "Stinky Face" will advance to the Elite 8, but it was a joyless slog that brought to mind the Big 10 Championship game.
3. Go West! vs. 2. The Snowy Day
Another close one, but "Go West!" edged out "The Snowy Day." I think all of us are ready to go to Arizona or New Mexico for a while and be done with winter or what constitutes Spring around here. "The Snowy Day" was a victim of circumstances, but it's another book Jack really likes.
Next time: the Dr. Seuss and Beatrix Potter regions of the Sweet 16.
